Santa Maria di Leuca: a practical guide to the 'end of the earth'

Santa Maria di Leuca is the very tip of Italy's heel, where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. Between its monumental lighthouse, basilica and dozens of sea caves, it is one of the most striking destinations in Salento. Here is how to plan a perfect day from Brindisi with a private transfer at €210 per vehicle for up to 8 people.

Where it is and the distance from Brindisi

Santa Maria di Leuca lies in the municipality of Castrignano del Capo, at the southern tip of the Salento peninsula, about 130 km from Brindisi. By car the drive takes around 1 hour 45 minutes, passing through Lecce and southern towns such as Gagliano del Capo and Patù.

There are no direct train connections and local buses require several changes with long travel times. This is why, especially for groups or families, a private transfer remains the most convenient way to reach 'de finibus terrae' without stress or uncertain connections.

The lighthouse and the 300-step staircase

Leuca's landmark is its 47-metre lighthouse, one of the most important in Italy, still active and open to visitors at certain times of year. Beside it stands the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, a pilgrimage site since ancient times. A monumental cascade fed by the Apulian Aqueduct flows down towards the harbour along a scenic staircase.

Strolling along the seafront at sunset, when the light turns the liberty-style villas pink, is an unmissable experience. Many of these nineteenth-century mansions, once summer homes of the local aristocracy, can now be visited or host hospitality businesses.

Sea caves: Cazzafra, Grotta del Diavolo and more

The coast between Leuca and Castro hides dozens of sea caves accessible only by boat. The most famous are Grotta del Diavolo, Grotta Cazzafra and Grotta delle Tre Porte. Boat excursions depart regularly from Leuca's harbour, letting you admire them from within amid turquoise waters and dramatic light.

We recommend booking the boat trip early in the morning, when the sea is calmer and light enters the caves best. Our driver can drop you directly at the harbour and pick you up at the agreed time, so you can enjoy the boat tour without worrying about parking.

Nearby spots: Punta Ristola and Marina di Novaglie

A few minutes from Leuca lies Punta Ristola, where tradition says the two seas meet; a small rocky beach with crystal-clear water perfect for a scenic swim. A little further north, Marina di Novaglie offers a wider bay with beach clubs and a sandy shore.

Those with more time can add a stop at Ciolo, with its famous bridge suspended over a small inlet loved by cliff divers, or stop in Patù to see the Centopietre, an ancient megalithic monument surrounded by centuries-old olive trees.
